Nerds Are Freaks Too started out as a 7,000 word free then transformed into a full-bodied story of about 37,000 words.
I submitted the story to Elloras Cave, but it was rejected because they felt the heroine was unlikable and they didn’t think that Leo should have this elaborate makeover for him to seem more appealing to the heroine.
So after regrouping and some tough love from fellow author Lena Matthews, I rewrote most of the story in a month and resubmitted. The rest is history!
From contract to publishing, Nerds Are Freaks Too took only about two months to release, which is light years in the publishing world. The editor, Kelli Collins, was really great to work with but she didn’t hold any punches. And I love that because as a writer, I’m always looking to improve my craft.
If Kelli hated a word or a scene, she told me. In fact, the last two chapters were entirely re-written because she “wasn’t digging the Frenemies Guy”. Instead of Roxanne donating the roses Leo sends to her, Leo goes to other extreme measures to regain her friendship and trust. If you want to read the deleted scene, click here. You might get a kick out of it because its an entirely different approach to what you may have read in the final version.
