Must Read Books Reviews doesn’t normally read historicals, but they took a chance with Jezebel. And in all honesty, its one of the most thorough reviews I’ve ever seen regarding one of my books. You can really tell that they read the book and they took the time to really give me an honest review and I really respect that as both an author and a reader. Raise your hand if you’ve read a review that barely backed up the reviewer’s rating. (Both of my hands are in the air:)

Curious about the review? Here’s a peek at what their reviewer Courtney thought about Jezebel:

This is the first historical novel review we’ve written for this blog and I think this was a nice one to start with, Courtney.

1) The setting. Most of this novel takes place in New York City, in 1938. We travel through clubs, private parties, dance venues, and even Madison Square Garden. We also get a feel for the discrimination that our protagonist, Celeste, lives with. Brown gives this facet of the novel a light, but revealing touch. She doesn’t pound you with it but provides several key scenes with the overt racism that Celeste experienced and you felt the awfulness of it without it taking over the rest of the book.

2) Celeste. Celeste is a dancer who is drawn back home to attend her estranged father’s funeral. It’s here that she meets a boxer, Shane Brennan. Celeste tries to deny the attraction and curiosity she feels for him but his persistence and politeness wears her down. While she tries to figure out what to do about Shane, she also is trying to clean up her act. You see, she’s been know to drink too much, sleep around too much, and lose amazing career opportunities with these self-sabotaging behaviors. She’s taking her move to New York as a chance to try to improve herself and her chances at living her dream career.

3)Shane Brennan. Shane Brennan is a boxer who has one huge secret that could derail his relationship with Celeste. He knows that this secret could destroy any chance he has to get to know her, so what does he do? He keeps the secret to himself.

Just wanted to let you know that it’s that time of the month! As always, I’m blogging over at RomancingtheJock.com. This month’s post is about how the 2013 NBA Playoffs feel more like the 1999 Playoffs due to the amount of veterans hitting the hardcourt.

Here’s a piece of my blog post.

The 2013 NBA playoffs feel sort of like 1999…

by Koko Brown

Romancing the Jock’s twitter account follows about three dozen feeds managed by sports teams, athletes, and sports shows. This past week there were two retweets that came across our news feed that took me back in time.

Sports Center’s recent announcement that Tracy McGrady had signed on with the San Antonio Spurs threw me for a loop. In all honesty, I thought the NBA All-Star had retired. A 70′s baby and a member of the class of 1997, I was pleasantly surprised he was still around. I remember the day he was drafted by the Toronto Raptors in 1997 and how he played with his cousin, Vince Carter (also still playing) in 1998. Although, McGrady pops up on a different team almost yearly (Houston 2009, New York 2010, Detroit 2011, Atlanta 2013, and Spurs 2013) you got to love the guy for his perseverance.

And if ESPN’s Jason Romano’s recent tweet is any indication, McGrady isn’t the only veteran who’ve made us question what year it is or puzzled us with their longevity.

Currently, there are sixteen teams in the NBA playoffs (Go, Brooklyn Nets) and more than half of the teams contain veterans born during the disco era, two of them recently turning the big 4-0!

Dozens of authors and review sites will be participating in this day-long event featuring articles/posts revolving around the Swirl/Loving theme. All the participants are also giving way free books/other prizes. Right now, it’s a toss up about what I’m going to write about. I’m wavering between interracial dating in general to a historical article about one of the first documented interracial relationships in Florida.

Determined to never let anyone change her bad girl ways, and risk discovery of her Achilles heel, Celeste is turned inside out when Shane Brennan walks into her life. The handsome prizefighter slowly chips away at the hard-hearted Hannah’s defenses and becomes the only man capable of taming her wild heart.

Warning: Although this is a sweet romance, the chemistry between a notorious dancer and a handsome prize fighter will make your toes curl. Expect plenty of drama and secrets before this couple can find their happily ever after.

EXCERPT:

“You got me, Daddy. Now what are you going to do?” she asked, proud her voice didn’t quake like her insides.

“You’re a real party girl aren’t you?” He brushed his hands over her forearms and Celeste called on all her reserves and years of experience to keep from wrapping her legs around his waist. “You’re all fun and games.”

Not the least bit insulted, but the consummate flirt Celeste touched her finger against the tip of his nose. “There’s nothing wrong with having a good time as long as no one gets hurt.”

His green eyes darkened to a dark coffee color and his nostrils flared. Even though she wanted to run for cover, Celeste held her ground.

“Even at another’s expense?” he asked.

Called on the carpet more than once in her life, Celeste studied her polished fingernails. “There wasn’t any harm done.”

“No harm done?” Fascinated, Celeste watched his Adam’s apple bob with each syllable.

“Nope,” Celeste replied cheerfully. His dark mood seemed to lighten hers. Anger was so much more manageable than kindness. With a coquettish tilt of her head, she traced the edge of his jacket lapel with a finger. “Don’t have a hissy, Daddy. All of this can be rectified quite easily. After tonight we’ll simply steer clear of each other.”

Celeste ignored the pang of regret her words caused. Somehow and in the most surprising way possible, he’d crawled under her skin. He made it impossible for her to think about anything except the two of them naked rolling around in clean white sheets.

“That’s not going to work for me. I’m calling in the favor and aim to collect.”

“You won’t get any objections here,” Celeste gushed in relief. Then in a purely submissive move, she placed her arms behind her back and leaned against the wall.

To her surprise, his gaze narrowed and she faltered. Had they not been on the same page? He didn’t help matters by simply standing there with his trap sealed shut. He was probably married, why hadn’t she thought of that earlier?

Embarrassed by her faux pas, Celeste felt her cheeks explode with heat. Thankfully, her dusky skin hid her humiliation. In an effort to save face, she ripped open her purse. “How about I even the score. Let me buy the next round.”

“I’m in training,” Shane reminded.

“You said that earlier, and yet you also sucked down a stogie. I doubt one of those can be good for an eight rounder.”

Shane’s eyebrow lifted as if surprised by her answer. She might be a floozy from Brooklyn, but as a performer on the road more than not, Celeste had seen more of the world in the past three years than most people would in their entire life.

“It’s ten maybe twelve rounds depending on the promoter,” he corrected.

Celeste blushed furiously. Not only had she failed at seducing him, but her attempt at impressing him fell pathetically short.

“Not many dames know the technicalities of boxing. I’m impressed.”

Even though she wouldn’t have admitted it to anyone, even under the threat of death, his compliment thrilled her from her natural roots to the tips of her toes.

Suddenly bashful and woefully out of her element, Celeste dipped her head. Not for long, Shane thumbed her under the chin until she met his gaze.

Celeste sighed in wonderment. His eyes were a perfect shade of pale green, ethereal like a shot of Crème de Menthe mixed with heavy cream.

The lust she’d felt earlier crept back in and wrapped her around its naughty little finger. Wanting to suddenly connect, she reached out and straightened his silk tie, tweaking the Windsor knot.

No I haven’t filled out a bracket, but I have tipped my hat to March Madness by dedicating my monthly article at romancingthejock.com to an interview I had with one of the starters from the 1966 NCAA Championship team, the Texas Western Miners and the subject of the Disney Film Glory Road. I’ve provided a piece of the transcript below:

Harry Flournoy’s road to glory wasn’t without a few bumps in the road

America is knee-deep in March Madness. People have filled out their brackets and many are already crying in their cups. So, I thought it would be appropriate to dedicate my post this month to an interview with Harry Flournoy.

To many of you, the name wouldn’t ring a bell. That’s not all too surprising, considering Harry and his teammates made their mark on sports history almost forty-seven years ago. Harry Flournoy, along with four other all-black starters, led Texas Western College to the 1966 NCAA men’s basketball title against an all-white starting Kentucky squad.

For some time after clenching the title, the Miners fell into obscurity. And it wasn’t a coincidence. The media basically did its best to make sure the team was forgotten. If there were write ups or press, such as James A. Micehner’s Sports in America, the coach was discredited or the team was painted as a bunch of jailbirds or “ragamuffins”. And it wasn’t until 2006, that the team’s contributions were finally seen in a positive light through coach Don Haskins autobiography, Glory Road and Disney movie of the same name.

Despite the hatchet job the team received, none of them seem bitter. Maybe its because they are simply products of a society that shaped them. Here’s an edited transcript of the three-hour interview I had with Harry recently:

You were born in Gary, Indiana. Was growing up in Midwest much different from growing up in the South?

There was a term called de facto segregation. There were no Jim Crow signs, but Gary Indiana was essentially a southern town in a northern location. At the age of seven, I attended an integrated elementary school because my mother wanted me to have the same resources and materials as white students. And as you can probably guess, my school years as one of the only black children enrolled wasn’t a bed of roses. I didn’t have any friends. I couldn’t get anyone to talk with me or play with me. During recess, I never played with the other kids, but sat by myself at the edge of the playground.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t just my classmates who treated me differently. One time, during recess, a student from the neighboring high school walked over from his school and spat on me. As a seven-year old and not really knowing how racism worked, I told my teacher. She told me, “It was my parent’s fault. Races should remain separate because blacks didn’t want an education.”

The only thing that got better during my time in Gary, Indiana’s school system was my attitude. As a got into high school and got better in sports, I’d learned to isolate myself from it (discrimination).

You didn’t get into organized sports until high school. Why the late start?

I started to take basketball more seriously because there was a girl I liked. I used to play with her older brother at the YMCA. I told him of my interest and he gave me an ultimatum–if I didn’t play basketball I couldn’t see his sister. My feelings for the girl faded, but not my love for basketball. I started to like the camaraderie, and it didn’t hurt at all that the girls used to line up against the fence.

What were your initial plans after graduating from high school? Were you looking to continue playing in college?

My mother only went as far as the 8th grade and my father’s highest education was the sixth grade. Expectations were high that I attend college. I was a B student in high school, so there was no question I couldn’t handle the workload. I quickly found out I wasn’t prepared. I didn’t take the SAT because no one told me about it. The only way I learned about college entrance exams was doing a college go see. I wasn’t surprised. My guidance counselor wasn’t my biggest cheerleader. I remember to this day his reaction when I told him I wanted to study business administration. With a blank expression, he said, “I think you would be better off going to Trade School and get a good skill like in mechanics and then get you a job in the steel mills.”

And despite what you may think, I wasn’t highly recruited out of high school. I was lacking in fundamentals. Of course, it didn’t keep me from beating down everyone’s door for a full ride. I called Michigan State, Cincinnati, even USC but all of their athletic scholarships had already been promised to other athletes. I found out later that there were a lot of schools interested in me. I didn’t find out about them until my last day of school when my basketball coach handed me a stack of letters while I was cleaning out my locker.

Today we have a special treat! Debut author Elley Arden has agreed to sit in the author hot seat. Whoo hoo! This Pittsburgh gal with a taste for fine wine, baseball, reading, and interior design is ready to make her mark on romantic fiction and all signs are showing she’s going to hit it big straight out the gate!

So without further ado, let’s heat things up!

What’s an average day like for you? Do you write full-time?

I’ve been writing fulltime for over a decade, but my first ten years were spent as a non-fiction writer and editor. In January, we got a Boston Terrier puppy, and she really through a lovely wrench into my writing plans. An average day is up at 6:00 am to help my three children (two teens and a preteen) get off to school, walk the dog at 8:00 am, and then by 8:30 sit to write while the dog naps until 11. At that point, it’s playing and training with Lizzy (the dog), and then she’s ready for another nap around 12:30-1 pm, so I write again until 3-3:30 pm. After that, all bets are off, because I’m usually running kids here, there and everywhere.

Do you have any writing influences? If you had to choose, which author would you consider the greatest influence?

Judith McNaught is by far my biggest writing influence. When I read my earliest manuscripts, I can see her influence on every page. Over the years, I’ve developed my own voice and started writing category length, so the influence is less apparent, but I know it’s there. Other major influences would be Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Rachel Gibson.

When did you decide on writing romance? Can you tell us something about your first debut novel?

I always think me writing contemporary romance is funny considering my love of historical non-fiction. I’m obsessed with royal history, and when I started reading romance, I gravitated toward Regency romances. But when I sat down to pen my first romance novel back in 2000, I wrote a contemporary romance. Why did I write one at all? Well, I was an avid reader, and at that time in my life I was incredibly short on cash, and with a full-time non-fiction writing job and two little ones, trips to the library to browse books for me weren’t always convenient. Writing was free. J It took me ten years to finish that manuscript, and I pray to God it never sees the light of day. Lol. I went on to write four more manuscripts—all contemporary—before Crimson Romance contracted my first category-length novel, Save My Soul: Book One in the Kemmons Brothers Baseball Series, in which a struggling psychotherapist falls for a bitter, divorced baseball agent.

What is the best thing about being a writer? The worst?

The best thing about being a writer is knowing what to do with all the voices in my head. I always say I would’ve been committed long ago if I didn’t have writing as an outlet. The worst thing? Putting myself (and my work) out there for other people to judge.

You’ve recently written a sports themed romance involving a sports agent and a psychotherapist, what inspired you to take on such an unusual pairing?

I’ve harbored a secret fascination for the world of sports performance mental training for a long time, and while I originally thought to make Maggie a sports psychologist, she appeared in my head as way more free-spirited and much younger than I imagined a successful sports psychologist to be, so I let her be my guide.

Have there been any surprises about the publishing industry you didn’t expect? Also, what was your route into publishing romance?

Oh, yes! As I mentioned, I spent years in non-fiction writing and editing, including being senior editor for a glossy, nationally distributed pregnancy magazine. When I started the fiction submission process, I wasn’t daunted by snail mail or long wait times, but then everything seemed to change and pick up speed with digital publishing. My route was slow at first, partly because I was submission-phobic, but I was incredibly lucky to get a lot of great feedback from the get-go. Once I started submitting regularly to publishers I learned about online, and keeping track of the results of those submissions, results came faster.

Does your family, spouse, neighbors, friend’s read your spicy tales? What do they think of your published work?

My husband would NEVER, but he’s incredibly supportive despite what I write often crossing the line into his job. My mother does read my work, and the first time I was scared to death until she looked at me with those wide mother eyes and said, “Darling, I’ve had sex before.” Lol. She’s so supportive is actually hurts sometimes. J And my friends? God, they are my biggest blessing on this journey. I have so many who support me, but there are five who read my work. I call them my Champagne Book Club. Just writing this and thinking about all the laughs and hugs and even tears over the years makes me incredibly humble. Of course, they think I’m brilliant and regularly tell me so.

Do you or have you ever based your characters on real people?

No. Real people are incredibly boring. Lol. I may be influenced by someone’s red hair or strong personality, but actually taking a person I know and making them into a character? Never.

What is your method of breaking through writer’s block?

I don’t get blocked. I believe the story is inside of me and it will come out if I write. I take a very mystical approach to my writing.

Do you bring your own life experiences to your writing? Your own personality? If so, how?

I certainly do. When my mother read Save My Soul, she could see the relationship between my life experiences to the characters’ life experiences in the book. People who know me well will see bits of me in everything I write, whether it’s my insider knowledge of baseball and medicine or locations like Lake Norman, North Carolina.

What fuels you as an author to continue to write?

The voices never stop. J I really have no idea what I’d do with them if I didn’t write.

Do you have plans to write more sports themed romances?

Save My Soul is only book one. Change My Mind, book two, featuring a rough-around-the-edges centerfielder, is complete but waiting on a release date. There will also be a third Kemmons Brothers Baseball book, Heal My Heart. After that, who knows? I have a completed single-title manuscript, featuring a baseball team owner, so hopefully the world will be reading that one day.

How do you approach your books? From concept to the final produce, how long does it take to complete a book?

I start with characters in my head. They usually pop up and I catch them mid-conversation. At that point, I start interviewing them, and when I figure out what they want out of life, I start concocting a bigger picture for them. If I’m in a hurry to get a book written, the “mental dating” only take a couple days before I start sketching the ideas into a Word document. I end up with a rough synopsis, and I’m ready to start Chapter One. I rarely look at that synopsis again, because as I write, the characters change my plans. Always. Since I write category length, I like manuscripts to hit the 50,000-word mark at first draft. I can have a first draft in two months. If my critique partner is reading chapter-by-chapter as I write, and there are no glaring issue, I only take a couple extra weeks to read through the draft and edit/revise before sending it off.

Can you give us some insight into any other upcoming releases?

I recently contract Crashing the Congressman’s Wedding: A Harmony Falls Novel to Crimson Romance with a tentative release date of August 5, 2013. Here’s a sneak peek:

Alice Cramer is tired of being pitied for her family’s transgressions, so she resolves to break out of the gutter and into the spotlight. As long as her local congressman can forget about their checkered past and help her secure a federal grant to open Harmony Falls Little Theatre, she’ll be the brightest star in town. But when Alice stands up in church and stops the congressman’s wedding, she dives headfirst into fresh scandal.

Why is Harmony Fall’s golden boy, Justin Mitchell, speeding down the interstate sans a new wife but with the local drama queen he’s been trying his whole life to avoid? Alice Cramer may have saved him the hassle of an arranged marriage to a woman he didn’t love, but she’s put a business transaction big enough to save an entire town in jeopardy–not to mention his reputation.

Soon Alice and Justin are dredging up and indulging in an attraction that threatens all their dreams and aspirations. But what if life together is the dream that matters most?

Time for THE Fast Five Random Questions:

What’s your favorite sport? Why?

Baseball. I was raised with the sport. (My father played in rec leagues for years.) I essentially married the sport. (My husband played high school, college and beyond, and now he’s a team physician.) And currently, my oldest is a high school pitcher. I’ve watched a lot of baseball, and I’ve come to appreciate the game as a fan. Some people go to movies on their own—I go to baseball games. J

You’re having a dinner party, what five people would you invite?

My college philosophy professor, Macklemore (rapper), Judith McNaught, my husband, and Derek Jeter. Wow! What a crew. Lol.

Aliens have landed on the planet. What are the three things you would tell them that are great about this planet? Our music, our wine, our ocean breezes

If you could create your own drink what would go in it and what would you call it?

I’d like to make my own wine maybe from some variety of grapes grown in Washington state. I’d have to really research this to make an intelligent guess at what I’d put in it, but it’d be red and full-bodied, and I’d call it Lust.

If you were a pirate what would your booty consist of? What would your pirate name be?

My booty would easily be limited-edition wines from around the world, and you can call me Cap’n El Cabernet. J

Jezebel is looking closer to a release date. So, I wanted to post an unofficial blurb to give you a taste of what the book is about. I will tell you thatthis romance set in the late 1930s has changed drastically from the first manuscript penned more than a decade ago. So much so, I ended up completely rewriting fifty percent of the book.

Jezebel is also a departure from my other books in that it’s not an erotic romance. Of course, there are steamy love scenes, but the hero and heroine don’t immediately become a couple or fall into bed like my other books. Instead, I hope I’ve developed a slow steady burn that will have your toes curling and rooting for them to go ahead and do it already!

Unofficial Blurb for Jezebel

Untamable and a complete jezebel, Celeste Newsome is a good time girl with plenty of personal demons. The beautiful dancer holds them at bay with late night benders, plenty of hooch and the company of the opposite sex.

Determined to never let anyone change her bad girl ways, Celeste’s fabricated existence is turned inside out when Sugar Shane Brennen walks into her life. A friend of her late father’s, the handsome prizefighter chips away at the Hard-Hearted Hannah’s futile attempts to keep him at arm’s length and becomes the only man able to finally tame her wild heart.

Check back often! In the next few days I’ll be posting a few excerpts and an official release date.

In what could possibly be a match made in heaven, publishing giant Harlequin is teaming up with Cosmopolitan magazine to produce a series of erotic novella entitled Cosmo Red Hot Reads. Hovering around 30,000 words, each title will feature “free-spirited women” committed to an “outgoing lifestyle”espoused by the international magazine and will be released every month beginning in May.

“We are very excited to be Cosmopolitan’s partner in publishing and believe these stories will prove popular with women everywhere, especially new adult fiction readers,” said Donna Hayes, Publisher and CEO of Harlequin Enterprises. “Women look to Harlequin for the same qualities that Cosmopolitan provides them—entertainment, enjoyment and inspiration—so it’s a natural fit.”

“Cosmo readers love fabulous fiction and if you picked up Fifty Shades of Grey then this is the book series for you,” said Cosmopolitan’s editor in chief Joanna Coles. “This is fiction for the modern girl negotiating modern love—with all its unpredictability and complications!”

The shorter length of Cosmo Red Hot Reads from Harlequin titles (approximately 30,000 words per title) should appeal to readers on a variety of platforms, including mobile devices.

Last Monday, the Baseball Writer’s Association released their annual list of inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. For the first time, in more than fifteen years, not a single player was chosen to grace the hallowed halls of Cooperstown. Only three non-players, all of them dead, will be inducted this coming July.

The bad. Initially, I was disappointed that there wouldn’t be any players inducted. I mean these guys give their hearts and souls to the sport. They play one hundred and sixty-two games a year, season after season, banging up their bodies, missing their families just so we can enjoy America’s favorite pastime. And with thirty-six players on BBWA’s ballot, all of them All-Stars and with more pennants under their belts than Steinbrenner, no one was named. Not one of them deserved recognition for their dedication to the sport?

The good…well maybe. Upon closer inspection, the ballot reads like a who’s who of baseball’s Steroid Era. So, its no wonder many of the voting members shied away from inducting anyone. What kind of message would that send our younger generation? That it was okay to cheat and you’ll be rewarded?

Unfortunately…

Even if you don’t like sports, it might benefit you to check out the site’s first post because we’re sponsoring a reader contest to celebrate the blog’s official launch. Some of the giveaways include a Kindle or Nook giveway. For information on how to enter, go to romancingthejock.com.
